Introduction

You’re Never Too Old to Learn – What your Kids Can Teach You about Life

When was the last time you stopped to stare at a paper bag crumbled up on the side of a walkway? Has there been a recent instance when you screeched in delight upon discovering a bug? This may not be every day fare for you, but for a child these sorts of occurrences are worthy of attention, and just plain fun. Kids get great joy out of life, even if everyday life seems incredibly mundane to the grown-ups around them. Perhaps it is time to learn from your kids that every single day has the potential to be magical.

Learning starts immediately for babies the day they are born. Right away they are learning that certain things like nursing or sucking on a bottle feels great, as does being nestled safely in a parent’s arms. Babies help parents to remember the sheer joy in discovering things for the first time. Watch any parent with a baby at a place like a zoo, and you’ll know this is true. Often times it is the parents, exuberant with the opportunity to show the baby things he has yet to encounter, who are completely excited as they point out all the interesting animals. Many times the baby could even care less, but the parents still have a great time, seeing things through the eyes of someone for who everything is brand new. Anyone who has a baby knows that having one is kind of like being granted a pass back into childhood. Everything is interesting, and everything is new.

Sometime around age three kids develop the dreaded “Why?” phase. As you may have guessed, this is the phase in which just about every single question or statement made by the parents is greeted with a prompt and automatic rebuttal of “why?” from the toddler. It could be a statement as simple as “let’s eat lunch now,” or a question like, the toddler with “why” will respond to “do you like that dress?” Yes, this phase can get increasingly annoying as it goes on, but if parents take the time to actually think about an answer before responding, they may be pleased to discover that they may actually be learning from their toddler! Having to answer question after question is tedious, but quite revealing. If parents take the time to answer questions they too will soon know why the sky is blue, why cats meow, and why fish live in water. Researching answers to questions is not only a great lesson to the toddler in searching for knowledge, but it can also be a great way for parents and toddlers to learn new things together…
